Leading with Enthusiasm
It’s January 2017 and it’s already been a busy year advancing technology for humanity in IEEE Region 6, staring in Las Vegas where the stars aligned January 2-4 to bring in students and young professionals, to meet and learn from some of our amazing professional and technical stars at our IEEE Rising Stars Conference. 2017 looks to be IEEE’s year of the young professional and our dual technical and professional tracks aimed to both empower and engage them. We led with so much enthusiasm, that our region’s young professional event is now heading over to IEEE Region 10 (Asia and Oceania) where 2017 means an IEEE Rising Stars Conference for them too.
The Consumer Electronics Show comes in not-so-coincidentally along with Rising Stars. It may not be an IEEE event, but its 177,000 tech attendees make it a beacon of advancing technology for both our public visibility and our technical activities. Our 2015-16 Director, Thomas Coughlin, reported on consumer electronics trends in IEEE Spectrum’s Tech Talk with his blog on “CES 2017: AR, VR and IoT Will Be Hot, 3D Printing Not” blog on the newest technology trends. One of the major trends are innovations in intelligent security in a world with more autonomous devices and automated responses. Much focus is on the consumer electronics side of the security problem, also I am putting together a 2017 special issue of the IEEE Aerospace & Electronics Magazine on cyber security in aerospace and welcome article submissions that tackle security for aviation and space, including UAS.
It’s a new year for leadership in our region and I am grateful to our volunteer leaders who have stepped forward to bring us forward, and, of course, we want to acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of all those who have led us to our role of embracing and making the future IEEE. Our first gathering as a region is kicks off with a meeting in Los Angeles February 3-5 and it brings together leaders from our sections across the west, our region, and our IEEE. I love to learn and we have a program designed to offer us an opportunity to do just that, while also to collaborate, plan, inspire and become inspired to advance technical and professional activities, mentor and lead, and work towards a membership that grows and meaningfully includes and enthuses across our IEEE.

Volunteer in Region 6
New opportunities to make a difference in your professional society come up frequently. Many are small, with a limit on the tasks and the needed results.
A good example recently: the GHTC has a lot of Camtasia recordings that need to be curated, so that engineering volunteer organizations can search them and learn from the conferences. We ask for a volunteer to help with this work, and we are grateful for him.
By simply clicking the link below, you will access the easy to use volunteer form.
Thanks for your attention,
Joe Decuir, Region 6 Secretary
